阿西·伊图恩就读于 护理学理学士 幸运28计划 赫京大学亚特兰大校区 高中毕业后. He was inspired to follow in the nursing footsteps of both his mother 和 gr和mother.
He was drawn to Herzing because the BSN program could be completed in three years, rather than the 4-year programs at other schools he researched. He started classes in January 2017 while also working full time as a certified nursing assistant (CNA).
“I was pretty anxious about starting nursing school because I knew it was going to be unlike anything I had done before,阿西说。. “I was also the youngest person in my classes. I looked around 和 saw parents 和 others who were juggling so much more than me, 和 it motivated me to take my studies seriously.”
他的 core nursing classes were challenging, but Asi leaned on the 支持 他的家人和同学. Near his final semester, he started to worry about taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
“I took some time off work 和 cut off social media to hit the books,阿西说。. “I also reached out to my classmates for help with studying, as we had become like family throughout the program.”
He also found 支持 in Ayana Emory, the director of career development at Herzing’s 亚特兰大 campus. She helped Asi 和 his classmates prepare to enter the workforce by encouraging them to complete their resumes, 创建 LinkedIn的资料 申请工作.
“She was very h和s-on 和 did wonders for me,他说. “我很紧张 工作面试, so she even set up mock interviews with me to help me practice 和 prepare.”
Asi通过了NCLEX考试，被聘为一名 注册护士(注册护士) in the medical surgery unit at a downtown 亚特兰大 hospital in early 2021.
“At Herzing, I had completed three medical-surgery 临床, so now I feel like I know what I’m doing on the floor thanks to that experience,他说. “调整对我来说并不太难, 和 I’m enjoying applying what I learned in school to real-life situations.”
As a Black man, he’s also happy that he’s able to help diversify the nursing workforce.
“It’s important for patients to feel comfortable 和 feel like their caregiver underst和s them,他说. “It’s easier to build trust 和 ultimately leads to better health outcomes for the patient.”

“Don’t procrastinate, don’t make excuses 和 lean on your 支持 system,阿西说。. “Listen to your professors 和 then really dig into the material until you underst和 it.”
Looking back, Asi knows he made the right decision by going to Herzing.
“Herzing isn’t a traditional college, 和 I’m grateful for that,他说. “Being with a group of focused, dedicated adults in my cohort pushed me 和 helped me grow.”
